The underlying philosophy of Motivational Interviewing, a technique utilized by therapist,  states that you are responsible for deciding whether to change and how. Anyone other than you persuading you to change is counterproductive and potentially leads to resistance, which may lead to harmful outcomes. People push back when others pressure them to change or do something they don't want to do. So, one of the objectives of the technique is to get you to write about change because intrinsically generated plans to change are considered more salient, lasting, and effective. This exercise utilizes methods of Motivational Interviewing by propelling you to initiate the change process and helping you think about the practicalities of taking action with your life. The action plan aims to help you explore and resolve your ambivalence about changing.
